Summer Camp 2002: Reports from the Field

This year, I am trying something new. As I hear reports "from the field" of the goings-on at Summer Camp, I will post them (edited, of course) here. That way, parents and Scouts who weren't able to attend Summer Camp will be able to get some of the flavor of the week. Stay tuned!

June 26, 2002 We Have Pictures!
Cynthia Melvin sent in these pictures of folks rafting at Summer Camp. The pictures were snapped at "The Tablesaw" on the Ocochee River. These are 'class 4' rapids, and were the site of the kayaking competition during the 1996 Olympic Games. Click on the link to see the pictures. (Note: Thanks to Mr. Scharling for his assistance in identifying the other people in the second photo.)
"Rabbit" Melvin & 3 members of Troop 1282: B.J.(Benny), Scooby (Lance), & Jonathon, plus Patty & one boy from Swainsboro GA.
David Scharling, Curtis Barber Jr. & Sr., Paul Sullivan, Richard Barnett, plus Ryan (guide) and Daniel (Skymont staffer).

June 19, 2002 David Scharling
Just got off the phone with David Scharling and there has been a change in plans on the return trip. They will not be spending the night at Camp Binachi in Meridian. The group will go ahead and do the tours (Ruby Falls, Lookout Mountain, Incline RR), but will go ahead and drive on through to Houston after that. They will call Quart Graves from Beaumont (about 2 hours out) so expect them to be home around 1-2 Sunday P.M.
David Scharling also said the food is really bad.

June 19, 2002 Quart
Talked with Quart this morning. He sounded like he was REALLY excited. Said his goal was to get three merit badges (mentioned pottery was one???) and get almost all his first class. He also told me he had a nose bleed for no reason. This really impressed him. I asked him how it happened. He said he didn't know. Figured it was because of the altitude. (Is there any altitude there??) Anyway, it was wonderful hearing from him. I only wish I was there. Next year...

June 19, 2002 Phillip
I heard from Phillip on Monday night. He said the food is awful at camp, and that there were only about five guys who thought it was okay. He said he only got about 2 hours of sleep on the bus ride. He mentioned that they have to be careful about what is left out at night at the campsite in order to avoid attracting "critters".

June 19, 2002 Alex
Alex told me that the weather has been good. No rain and cool at night. They had a soccer game--the boys against the staff and the boys lost. The Polaris boys will be camping on Thursday and doing the 5-mile hike on Friday. They are getting a lot of their rank requirements done. Don't know about the older boys.

June 18, 2002 Alex
I heard from Alex last night--he said they didn't get any sleep on the bus (surprise, surprise), the food is awful (the nachos are okay at the store--I expect he'll live on them).
