New Meeting Location Announced!
Nov 11, 2003
The First Baptist Church in Sugar Land (on Wood and 5th St.) has agreed to let us meet there on Tuesday evenings through May. After May the church will evaluate how things are working out and we will go from there. I got a lot of feedback from members of our Troop the time we met there as to how the room really met our needs. So for the next few months anyway, let's plan on having all of our regular Troop meetings and PLC's at the First Baptist Church, provide cheerful service to our hosts and be respectful of the facility they have graciously allowed us to use. A big thank-you goes out to Carrie Graves who set this up for us with the church. I have not heard if we will be allowed to park our trailer at the church but will pursue this and see where we get with it.
Yours in Scouting,
Mike Morton

Over the weekend, I finally(!) managed to install and get running a photo / image gallery package on the web site. This will provide us a place to display our photos online. If anyone has photos they want posted, please contact me. As I find the spare time, I will be posting the photos I already have.
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. You can get to the gallery by clicking on Troop 148 PhotoWeb.

"Almost Live from Summer Camp" - Thursday
Jun 13, 2003
"I got a call from Phillip this morning. He said he has had a fun time at camp. They have had some rain, off and on, for a couple of days, but he said that thier tent has stayed dry. He said that he saw the falls and thought that was neat. He did comment that there are leaches in the water, but I think these boys tend to sensationalize a little. It sounds like he has really enjoyed his merit badge classes. He had motor boating (which they finished early), Communications, Animal Science, and Astronomy. Phillip has complained about the food, but I would expect that from him. He said they were planning on leaving camp to head home at 8 tomorrow morning. Seems like the mail was running pretty efficiently because it only took two days both times for him to receive my letters." --Sharon Schneider

"Almost Live from Summer Camp" - Wednesday
Jun 12, 2003
"Alex called last night. He seems to be having fun. They did a neat project for soil and water conservation/environmental science with trying to help direct runoff and prevent erosion. He's been working as a waiter in mess hall sometimes. He said they celebrated Braden Turner's birthday with a 'brownie'. (Happy Birthday, Braden!) There are lots of tarantulas. It rained on Tuesday night but they stayed dry in the canvas tents/platforms--not too muddy though. Thursday night the guys doing Camping MB will be camping out (hope it doesn't rain). He has been receiving the emails (so I know it works)." --Judy

"Almost Live from Summer Camp" - Monday
Jun 11, 2003
"We talked with Alex last night and he said it is a great camp. Lot's of water activities--they have a glob to jump on. It helps being in the water. It sprinkled yesterday a bit and the food isn't too bad (emphasis on 'too'--this coming from one of the world's pickiest eaters). They all got tents and some boys are tenting by themselves. He and Phillip are tent mates. Yesterday's merit badges was mostly book work, but today they'll do some hands on stuff. He said Kip is helping to teach motor boating (we have 7 boys taking that). Environmental Science was all the stuff he studied for his final 6th grade science exam so he knew a bunch of it. Soil and Water Conservation will have a lot of outdoor activities." --Judy

"Almost Live from Summer Camp" 2003 - Sunday
Jun 8, 2003
Once again this year, we are offering "Almost Live from Summer Camp" - a chance to share news from the Scouts (and adults) at summer camp with those who stayed at home. Send in any reports you get to me, and I will get them on the web site as soon as I get a chance.
Sunday's report: "I've only heard from Cynthia and the troop arrived by 4:30 and was trying to settle in. Not enough tents (even though I checked w/camp and was reassured that all platform had canvas tents) and John Lander already found a tarantula in one of the tents. Guess there aren't many trees and not much of a latrine."
Judy Russell was also nice enough to send me a few pictures of the campers at the church, as they were getting ready to leave.

The Troop Cleaned Up at the Car Wash!
May 19, 2003
Saturday morning, I took my "new" car down to Gerlands for its first ever washing (at least, since I have owned it!) When I got there, Troop members were hard at work, washing, rinsing, and drying the cars that came in. Still others were collecting the donations, while one young man (who may be the next Ron Popeil!) was acting as a one-person advertising agency, reeling the customers in like a skilled fisherman.
As far as I could tell, a wonderful time was being had by all, the weather was cooperative, and many cars (mine included!) left Gerlands that day a LOT cleaner than they came in! Of course, no story like this is complete without a picture:

Updates and News Notes from Judy Russell
May 9, 2003
Ms Russell will have a form the next two meetings for you to verify your email for the troop email lists and sign for approval to use. She will then send it to the troop webmaster (that's me) to update the email lists.
Don't forget that Saturday is Shawn Aubin's Eagle Court (and Sunday is Mother's Day!!). Next week is PLC (only troop/patrol leadership) need to attend. It is the last week for Baylor Study so make sure the boys meet their goals. May 20th they will be getting the 5-a-day badge and doing data collection again (using the Palm Pilots and wearing the pedometer for 3 days) so they will need to be there at 6:00.
Committee meeting is scheduled for May 15th at Church--all parents are welcomed. Committee work area leaders -- if you can't attend, submit a report to John Butler.
Also, if you haven't already done so the boys and adults going to summer camp need to see a doctor and have the either Medical Exam class 2 or class 3 (adults over 40) filled out and returned by May 20th (this is also the night that boys have to pay $55, adults $40 and remainder of transportation fee if not paid already). These forms are available at the site below (SHAC has an all new website so check it out):
http://www.samhoustonbsa.org/Home/Forms/
I also just noticed that SHAC is now allowing YPT to be taken online. Here is the link to go and take the course over the web. Pay close attention to instructions so you will get credit. All adults going to camp need to have their YPT current. If you have questions, talk with Mike Morton.
http://www.samhoustonbsa.org/Home/Events1/YouthProtectionTrainin/
We will try to post the hot sheet on the Troop 148 website, so bear with us while we start doing it. There was a problem with the internet service provider (ISP) this week and mail wasn't getting through. It appears to be working now.

or, maybe not...
Nov 27, 2002
The Committee got word from the Melvins that, alas, when they arrived there was not a pecan to be gathered. It seems that others got to them first, possibly due to a tornado which passed through the area and it may have shaken the pecans out of the trees early. Anyway, the Melvins send their best, and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.
Time to "SHELL OUT" for the Troop!
Nov 21, 2002
At the Committee meeting last night, we decided that we needed to have one more fund raiser. The Melvins will bring back 200 lbs. of cracked pecans from Alabama after Thanksgiving. We need each scout parent to pick up and shell some of the pecans. Pick up is scheduled for Monday Dec. 2 at the Melvins (call Cynthia at 281-494-1317 before going over). These shelled pecans need to be brought back at the Court of Honor on Dec. 5. There will be a group of parents meeting on Dec. 7 at 9:00 at the Barnetts to make sugar pecans. Anyone can help then also. We will then fill quart jars and sell them (you can buy them for XMAS gifts) hopefully in front of a store. If you can help, please contact Judy Russell.

Web Resource for Merit Badges
Sept 14, 2002
The Merit Badge Research Center at http://www.meritbadge.com has been a significant on line resource for Scouts and Scout leaders for years. However, last year they mistakenly allowed one of their domain names, "meritbadge [dot] org" to lapse, and it was picked up by someone else, and is now associated with a pornographic Web site. The MBRC has been unsuccessful in regaining control of the "meritbadge [dot] org" domain name, and has issued this warning to all Scouts and leaders. I have verified that all links to the MBRC site from ours point to the correct domain. I would recommend you ensure that the Favorites for MBRC on your own machines point to http://www.meritbadge.com.
